Spofford: Mutualism

This upside down jellyfish, Cassiopea xamachana, shares a mutulaistic relationship with the single-celled algae called zooxanthellae, Symbiodinium microdriaticum, which live on the mouth arms of the jelly. These species have a mutualistic relationship because the upside down jelly is flipped upside down to provide the zooxanthellae with sunlight needed to photosynthesize and in return, the upside down jelly uses excess food produced by the zooxanthellae.
