Egan: Instinctual Behavior

Ribbon Snake
Thamnophis sauritus sauritus
42.353724,-71.38092

This snake is exhibiting instinctual behavior. I spotted this snake as it was slithering away, and as I began to approach the snake, it instantly became still.  The snake stopped instinctually to make it difficult for the predator (me) to find it, as it was no longer moving and making noise. It was also harder for the predator to find because it stayed still with it's surroundings, so it did not attract attention to itself. This instinctual behavior saved the snake from potential danger.
