Crowley: Evidence of evolution

Barndoor Skate (Raja laevis)

The barndoor skate has evolved its color and spots to look like the sandy ocean floor with which it camouflages. This camouflage evolution allows the skate to avoid predator sharks and avoid suspicion when hunting small fish and invertebrates along the sea floor.

Leafy Seadragon (Phycodurus eques)

The leafy seadragon has evolved to look like the kelp and seaweeds found in its Australian habitat in order to blend in and stay disguised from preying larger fish. Pictured above are two different angles of the same leafy seadragon.
