Spofford: Altruistic Behavior

Bee societies including this society of honey bees, Apis mellifera, located at 42.26410, -71.76607 exhibit altruisic behavior because the worker bees do not reproduce, but they labor for the queen bee that is fertile. They also sting intruders to protect their society which results in their death. In the above photograph, the larger bee in the center is the queen bee and the bees surrounding it are the worker bees.
